Thursday 10/24 Opening Keynote with David Zach - Designs on the Future 9:00 am

    1. What do you do that either can’t be automated, or still shouldn’t be automated? And, do you know how to defend your choices on how we can best use these tools?

    2. How do you become more “divergently curious” so that instead of just thinking outside the box, you learn to think into other boxes and ask and answer this key question: What else do I need to be curious about?

    3. Why can talking with more strangers make the future more safe and more productive? Why will those conversations help to ensure that the future is a little less artificial and a lot more intelligent?

In this fascinating and fun keynote presentation, David Zach sparks the day’s conversations on how our designs today can build a more interesting future.

Afternoon Breakout Option 2 - 1:30-2:30 pm - Being Archenough with Laurie Hoffman, AIA

What does the architecture profession look like today, and how will it continue to change as future generations embrace it? Every firm is unique, and each path to licensure varies. Our education, both in school and in the workplace, equips us to adapt to diverse roles which makes the possibilities within our careers endless. After working in traditional firms for over 10 years, I decided to maintain my license but switch to the Owner’s side of the table, some people referred to this as switching over to the dark side, but I view it as a new opportunity to advocate for the profession while advancing my own. At the end of the day, whatever Architect you become is Archenough, and that’s ok.

Parents with children under 18 comprise 40% of the labor force and 92% of families with minor children have at least one parent employed full-time. 2/3rds of all families feature two working parents. The labor participation rate for mothers has increased dramatically since the feminist movement mainstreamed females holding a job. In a single generation, we’ve gone from women not being able to independently take out a business loan to 42% of all businesses are majority-owned by women. Yet, our kids and families remain hidden.

Closing Keynote: Leading in a Hyper-fast Future; the future of architecture and design - Tim Hawk, FAIA - 4:00 - 5:00 pm

The future of architectural practice will be informed by the break-neck pace of technological development, and the architect of the twenty-first century has the opportunity to step into an industry-leading position. Over the past twenty-five years, there is growth in the use of prefabricated construction solutions, yet general contractors have less skill in planning and integration. If the architect can recognize the demand for this type of leadership, the profession stands poised to dramatically reposition the role of the architect, increase prosperity, and solve societal needs.
This presentation will include topics that will enrich the architects who participate.
